There is something about Red Lodge in the summer that makes you want to slow down and stay awhile.
The mountains are green, the days are long and downtown feels especially inviting with its local shops, restaurants and patios. Whether you are planning a full weekend or making the easy drive from Billings for the day, Red Lodge offers plenty to do without needing an overly packed itinerary.
Here are a few of my favorite ways to enjoy summer in Red Lodge.
Drive the Beartooth Highway
A summer trip to Red Lodge would not feel complete without heading up the Beartooth Highway.
The drive takes you through forests, alpine meadows and dramatic mountain scenery before climbing to nearly 11,000 feet. There are plenty of overlooks and places to stop along the way, so give yourself more time than you think you will need.
Bring a jacket, pack some snacks and do not rush this one. The drive truly is part of the experience.
Conditions can change quickly at that elevation, even during summer, so always check the current road report before leaving.
Spend the Day at Red Lodge Mountain
Red Lodge Mountain is not only a winter destination.
During summer operations, visitors can enjoy scenic lift rides, hiking and mountain disc golf. It is a fun way to escape the heat, take in the views and experience the mountain at a completely different pace.
Summer days and hours can vary, so check the mountain’s current schedule before making plans.
Explore the Local Trails
You do not have to be an experienced hiker to enjoy the scenery around Red Lodge.
The area has access to trails for a range of abilities, from relaxed walks close to town to longer hikes in the Custer Gallatin National Forest. There are also opportunities for mountain biking and horseback riding throughout the area.
Trail conditions can change during the season, especially at higher elevations, so carry plenty of water, check conditions and be prepared for wildlife.
Visit the Yellowstone Wildlife Sanctuary
The Yellowstone Wildlife Sanctuary is a wonderful stop for families and anyone interested in Montana wildlife.
The sanctuary provides a permanent home for animals from the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem that cannot safely return to the wild. Visitors can learn more about the animals, conservation and the important role each species plays in our region.
Check current hours and tour availability before visiting.
Wander Through Downtown Red Lodge
Some of the best Red Lodge afternoons are the ones without a strict plan.
Take your time walking along Broadway, browsing the local boutiques, art galleries, gift shops and specialty stores that make downtown feel so unique. It is a great place to find Montana-made goods, home decor, clothing, local artwork and a few things you probably did not plan on bringing home.
Downtown is also full of great places to eat. Whether you are in the mood for a casual lunch, a burger, pizza, coffee, something sweet or dinner and drinks on a patio, there are plenty of local restaurants to choose from. Part of the fun is making a full afternoon of it, shopping for a while, stopping for a bite and then continuing down Broadway.
The historic buildings, independently owned businesses and mountain views give downtown Red Lodge so much character. Seasonal trolley rides and historic tours may also be available on select dates throughout the summer, making it easy to see more of town and learn a little about its past.
Learn a Little Local History
For a quieter afternoon, visit the Carbon County Historical Society and Museum.
The museum shares the stories of the people, industries and communities that helped shape Carbon County. Historic walking tours may also be available on select summer dates, giving visitors a closer look at Red Lodge’s architecture and past.
It is an easy addition to a downtown day, especially when you want a break from the afternoon heat.
Play a Round of Golf
Red Lodge Mountain Golf Course is another beautiful way to spend a summer day.
The 18-hole course includes mountain views, lakes, creek crossings and the occasional wildlife visitor. It is scenic, challenging and very different from many of the courses around Billings.
Tee times are a good idea during busy summer weekends.
Book a Horseback Ride
Seeing the Red Lodge area from horseback is one of those experiences that feels completely Montana.
Local guided rides are available near town, with options that may include shorter foothill rides and longer mountain adventures. It is a memorable way to experience the scenery and slow down for a few hours.
Reservations are recommended during the busier summer months.
Make a Weekend of It
Red Lodge is close enough for a spontaneous day trip but has more than enough to fill an entire weekend.
Start with breakfast downtown, spend the day hiking or exploring the mountain, enjoy dinner on a patio and leave the next morning open for the Beartooth Highway. The best part is that you can make the trip as adventurous or as relaxed as you want.
Summer in Montana always seems to move a little too quickly. Red Lodge is the perfect reminder to step away from the schedule, take the scenic route and enjoy what is right in our own backyard
